I woke up this morning to a situation that has become all too common: Islamic terrorists have seized a hotel in Mali, and now hold a hundred or more innocent civilians hostage.
The gunmen arrived at the Radisson Blu Hotel in downtown Bamako, Mali today in a car with “diplomatic plates.” Immediately upon arrival, they pulled weapons and started “shooting and shouting “God is great!” in Arabic” according to the BBC.
While most people (this writer included) probably couldn’t find Mali on a map, the western African nation and former French colony has been a hotbed of terrorist activity for years, and was the recipient of a massive French military intervention which officially ended in 2014.
While it’s far to early to tell with certainty, it seems likely that this event was inspired by, if not directly related to, the recent ISIS attacks in France. More to follow as this develops.
