We all love a new video game and getting our hands on it on the day of release is always exciting. But how do we know what games are coming out when? If we’re looking forward to a specific title, missing the release date or the release of new content for our favourite game can be quite disappointing. Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to keep up with new game releases and make sure you don’t miss anything. Here are a few ways that you can keep an eye on the happenings in the games industry.
Games Media Websites
Of course, news media is a great place to start. Big games media websites like IGN and PC Gamer provide a couple of different ways to keep on top of game releases. You can keep an eye on their news feeds, you can watch the reviews they put out, or you can use their handy release calendars which do a great job of detailing the releases that you can expect over the coming days, weeks, months or even years. Using games media websites is a good option because you’ll also get some thoughts and opinions on the games from industry professionals along with the release schedules, so you’re more likely to buy a game you’re going to enjoy playing. There are games media websites for every type of game no matter how fringe your tastes.
Game Developer Websites
Many games publisher websites also have their own news section, like this one on the popular online casino and games company Jackpot Casino website that shows the latest game releases, prizes on offer, or special deals that the company offers. Websites like Jackpot Casino will, of course, be specific to the game developer in question, but if you’re a fan of a specific developer or games publisher, you’ll do well paying them a visit from time to time. Devolver Digital, for example, has a really entertaining news section (they call it their “Propaganda”) that details all of their game releases as well as specials they may be running on various platforms.
YouTube Videos
Another way to keep on top of game releases in an interactive format where you’ll get a look at what the games look and feel like, as well as commentary and reviews, is by following big gaming channels on YouTube or similar video sharing services. These gaming channels will provide news and information on new releases, as well as do gameplay showcases, often playing the first few minutes or hours of the game so you can get an in depth feel for what it is you might be buying.
Game Podcasts
Perfect for the gamer who uses public transport, has a longer commute, or just wants something to listen to on their daily gym routine or run, the gaming podcast offers an easily digestible format for those on the go. These podcasts provide much the same benefit as YouTube videos in that they offer opinions, thoughts and critique of games, but also tend to have more of a personal feel to them, with podcast hosts sharing more about who they are and what they like about gaming in general and not just the game on display. While you’re spoiled for choice for great gaming podcasts, if you’re looking for some good recommendations, check out Giant Bombcast and Kinda Funny Games Daily, both of which offer a really entertaining listen.
Social Media
Social media is great for following gaming news for a few reasons. Not only will you keep on top of the rumour mill of upcoming games and announcements, but you can interact with fellow video game fans and even the developers themselves. All you need to do is like their page or follow their account and you’ll have news delivered straight to your app of choice. Twitter is the best place to get video game news quickly and easily, but communities like Reddit offer niche groups where you can get together with fans of your favourite games and discuss them too.
Digital Game Stores
The last place we recommend keeping an eye on is your platform’s digital store. For Xbox, this is the Xbox Store, for PlayStation, the PlayStation Store and for PC, platforms like Steam or the Epic Games Store. Not only do they have a new releases section, but they’ll also show specials and discounts on older titles that you’ve always wanted to play and you might be able to buy at a bargain price.
Using just one of these ways of staying on top of new game releases is enough to not miss any new releases or content drops for your favourite games, but if you’re a video game fan, you’ll undoubtedly want to follow more than one avenue of getting your gaming news.
