I ran across a video in my Facebook feed the other morning, a clip of Rep Barbara Lee sharing this story in an interview on CNN:
“I was walking from the House building on Capitol Hill to the Capitol and that man, a white guy stopped me and told me I could not get into the members’ elevator and you know we have pins and I was going to vote. And he blocked me from getting into the elevator and told me I was not a member of Congress and it was for members only. I said, Sir, I’m a member of Congress. And I showed him my pin and he said, whose pin did you steal?”
A man with that mindset getting within arm’s reach of one of our elected representatives is just an unforgivable breach of security. I wanted to know who was responsible for allowing that to happen, so I searched for the details. There aren’t any. Nothing from law enforcement, nothing from security, no video, no witnesses, no indication she’s ever told that story before. And most tellingly, nothing from CNN. Nothing at all. All I could find were posts of the story itself. Some doubting that it happened, some saying it definitely did not happen, some saying that daring to even QUESTION that it happened is conclusive evidence you’re a white supremacist.
I can’t say there isn’t any evidence this happened, I can just say I can’t find any. If YOU have any, I’d be grateful to you if you’d pass it along. This is beyond politics; I don’t WANT to believe a sitting member of the House of Representatives made up a story to stoke racial animosity for personal gain and told it on CNN prime time. I don’t want to believe we’d all just ignore that, no consequences or even questions. I don’t want to believe we’re so far gone that anyone could possibly assume they’d get away with such a thing. Because the people who suffer for things like that are never the ones who should.
Except that the story is a fact now to the people who never question what their news tells them. It proves to them that even people in our highest offices aren’t safe from those evil random white guys, even in one of the most secure buildings on the planet. And now the people in charge of bringing America down know there’s probably NOTHING they can’t get away with saying on CNN prime time. They don’t have to worry about questions, because questions are racist.
While I was looking for details, I ran across this bill Rep Lee is sponsoring:
“HCRes44 Urging the establishment of a United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation”
I’ve got a suggestion for the top of that commission’s To Do list.
