Author’s Note:
I recently heard a number of media pundits on both the left and the right using the term “dark woke.” To my great disappointment, I learned that’s it’s not the name of a new bad guy in a galaxy far, far away, but instead something closer to home. So, I asked ChatGPT to tell me a little about this new and exciting concept and found out that it wasn’t really new, or all that exciting, after all: this new flavor of woke sure tastes like the old one to me.
Dark woke is a recently coined term used to describe an extreme, hardline iteration of โwokeโ social justice activism. In essence, it refers to when progressive activism goes โdarkโ โ abandoning the usual calls for empathy or nuance in favor of moral absolutism and aggressive tactics. This phrase is typically applied in a critical sense, highlighting instances where activism becomes authoritarian, punitive, and intolerant of any dissent. The result is a form of radicalized โwokenessโ characterized by rigid ideology, cancel culture, and an ends-justify-the-means mentality.
Origins of the Term “Dark Woke”
The term dark woke gained traction in early 2025 as an online meme and hashtag on social media. Under the hashtag #DarkWoke, left-leaning users began sharing edgy jokes and vengeful memes โdelighting in or wishing for the suffering of Trump supporters,โ essentially celebrating misfortunes befalling their political opponentsโfoxnews.com. This trend emerged after a period of frustration among some progressives in the wake of combative Trump-era politics. Rather than taking the high road, these activists embraced a more provocative and combative tone โ a kind of โnew hashtag-resistanceโ where outrage and ridicule were weaponized against conservatives.
Media reports describe dark woke as โthe newest evolution of what was once labeledโฆthe dirtbag leftโ, meaning young progressives unafraid to viciously mock their adversariesโ In practice, dark woke posts or actions are โthings that you wouldnโt normally say or do, made acceptable because theyโre directed at Republicans.โโ The idea is to invert the typical โwokeโ style โ instead of earnest virtue policing and politeness, dark woke adherents pride themselves on being sarcastic, crass, or even cruel for the sake of the cause. As one description put it, they want to โsubvert the qualities that people think made wokeness cringeโฆ and go Joker Mode to Make Democrats Cool Againโโ In other words, itโs a conscious embrace of the โdark sideโ of activism: going low when the other side goes low, rather than โgoing highโ in the Michelle Obama sense.
Importantly, dark woke isnโt a term activists chose for themselves in a positive light โ itโs often used tongue-in-cheek or pejoratively to critique this turn toward negativity. The meme arose partly as a reaction to right-wing online vitriol: seeing how effective outrage and insult could be in rallying a base, some on the left flirted with fighting fire with fire. Progressive communications strategists noted that profane, no-holds-barred rhetoric grabbed attention in ways โboring pablumโ did not, leading some Democrats to say theyโre โbig fan[s] of โdark wokeโโ as a strategy. The New York Times even reported that party insiders were encouraging a โnew form of combative rhetoricโ aimed at matching Trumpโs incendiary style โ and โonline, it has a name: โDark woke.โ“
Characteristics of “Dark Woke” Activism
What sets dark woke activism apart is not a specific ideology (it still pursues left-wing social justice goals), but rather how it pursues them. Key characteristics include:
- Moral Absolutism: Dark woke adherents often see issues in black-and-white terms of good vs. evil, leaving little room for nuance or disagreement. They exhibit a zealous certainty that their stance is morally unassailable. This can lead to a puritanical tone in which anyone not fully aligned is judged harshly. Critics argue that this โintensified a new set of moral attitudesโ on the left that โtend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity.โโIn other words, an uncompromising worldview takes hold, and differing opinions (even well-intentioned or moderate ones) are often dismissed as intolerable or traitorous.
- Cancel Culture Tactics: The dark woke mentality readily employs cancel culture โ using public shaming, boycotts, and calls for punishment to enforce its moral code. Rather than simply criticizing opposing views, activists may seek to ostracize or eliminate the offender from their platform or position. Recent years have seen numerous examples frequently cited in this context: editors fired for running controversial pieces, books withdrawn for alleged โinauthenticity,โ journalists barred from covering certain topics, professors investigated for quoting literature in class, researchers fired for sharing peer-reviewed findings, and organizational leaders ousted for what might be just clumsy mistakesโ. All of these are instances where activists didnโt just protest someoneโs ideas but pushed for concrete consequences (firings, de-platforming) to uphold a perceived moral line. The dark woke ethos condones these harsh penalties under the belief that intolerant or offensive speech must be purged to protect marginalized groups. Detractors see this as a hallmark of authoritarian rigidity โ a refusal to forgive errors or allow dissent.
- Ideological Rigidity and Conformity: In a dark woke environment, there is intense pressure to adhere strictly to the approved doctrine of social justice issues (on race, gender, sexuality, etc.). Any deviation or nuance can be viewed as betrayal. This creates an atmosphere of ideological purity tests and groupthink. As noted in the public debates about progressive activism, supporters of this mindset often demand โadherence with rapidly changing new normsโ and have little patience for those who hesitate to adopt the latest consensusโ. The result is that even allies can be cast out for minor disagreements โ a dynamic critics liken to an ideological circular firing squad. This rigidity is what prompts warnings (even from some liberals) that segments of the social justice left have become illiberal themselves, valuing dogma over open dialogue.
- Incivility and Confrontational Rhetoric: Another defining trait of dark woke activism is its comfort with harsh, combative language and tactics that would once have been considered beyond the pale for progressive causes. Profanity, personal attacks, and even expressions of vengeance are not off-limits โ in fact, theyโre often celebrated if aimed at the โrightโ targets. This is a stark shift from the earlier liberal ethos of maintaining a higher standard of decorum. For instance, whereas Michelle Obama once urged โwhen they go low, we go high,โ the dark woke creed is closer to โwhen they go low, go even lower.โ Even elected Democrats have exemplified this shift: a Brooklyn councilman quoted a colleague saying โWhen they go low, you gotta dig for oil,โ encapsulating the new willingness to get down in the mud. Supporters argue this edgy approach energizes young activists and counters the ferocity of right-wing rhetoric on equal footing. But to critics, it represents a race to the bottom that erodes any moral high ground and normalizes toxicity in political discourse.
Examples and Public Discourse
Because โdark wokeโ is as much a critique as a label, discussions of it often revolve around high-profile incidents that illustrate its ethos. Media and political examples help show what this phenomenon looks like in practice and how the public is responding:
- Viral Political โClapbacksโ: One oft-cited example occurred in Congress. Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a progressive Democrat, got into a heated exchange with far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene during a hearing. After Greene mocked Crockettโs โfake eyelashes,โ Crockett fired back by insulting Greeneโs appearance (referring to her โbleached-blonde, bad-built, butch bodyโ). Instead of being reprimanded by her party, Crockettโs caustic retort โbecame a meme. It was printed on T-shirts. It got her an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel.โ Democratic strategists pointed to this incident as a perfect example of โdark wokeโ โ a moment when a Democrat unapologetically hit below the belt and was cheered for itโ. The embrace of this viral clapback showed how the dark woke attitude rewards performative outrage. Supporters saw it as justified pushback against a notorious provocateur (Greene), while critics fretted that such personal attacks degrade the civility of discourse. The fact that it boosted Crockettโs profile (social media accolades and late-night TV invitations) illustrates the incentive structure at play: being โdark wokeโ can bring attention and adulation from oneโs base.
- Cancel Culture Controversies: Numerous cultural flashpoints in recent years have fed the dark woke debate, as mentioned above. For example, in 2020 an open letter in Harperโs Magazine signed by 150+ prominent writers warned that a โneeded reckoningโ on social justice had โintensified a new set of moral attitudesโฆat the expense of open debate and toleration of differences.โ They alluded to cases where individuals suffered outsized consequences for missteps โ from editors and professors losing jobs to authors having books pulled โ implicitly criticizing the zeal of cancel culture. The public discourse around that letter became a referendum on dark woke-type behavior: supporters of the letter decried what they saw as an intolerant climate stifling free speech, while detractors of the letter argued that holding people accountable for offensive actions is not โcancelingโ but rather consequences for misconduct.
Regardless, high-profile incidents keep this issue in the headlines. When a major film studio fired an actress over offensive social media posts, or when a professor was mobbed online for a years-old remark, those stories are reported not just as celebrity or campus news but as part of a larger pattern. National news outlets have compiled lists of such cancel culture incidents, noting how online mobs advocate for someone to get fired over anything from an old tweet to an innocuous comment that doesnโt conform to the latest progressive orthodoxyโ. Each controversy โ be it J.K. Rowlingโs ostracism over transgender comments, a journalist pilloried for an unpopular op-ed, or a scientist disinvited from a lecture โ fuels the argument that there is a โdark wokeโ strain in modern activism that brooks no dissent and seeks to punish transgressors. The consequences can be career-ending, and the public discourse around these events is often polarized: one side sees accountability and progress, the other sees witch-hunts and a chilling effect on free expression. - Backlash and Debate: As dark woke behaviors have become more visible, theyโve prompted significant backlash, including from some liberals and centrists. Mainstream commentators worry that this radical approach undermines the credibility of social justice movements by alienating potential allies and mirroring the very intolerance activists claim to oppose. For instance, Fox News and other outlets have seized on the dark woke trend as evidence that the left is embracing extremism. They report on Democrats โabandoning civil politics in favor ofโฆโdark wokeโโ combativenessโ, highlighting quotes about using โany means necessaryโ to fight Republicansโ. Such stories, often covered in national media, illustrate the political consequences of the dark woke mindset: they can energize a base but also give ammunition to opponents who paint all progressives as angry ideologues. Within left-leaning circles, there is an ongoing debate about whether to double down on this edgy approach or to reject it. Some activists argue that civility has failed and that only an unapologetically aggressive stance will beat back authoritarian threats from the right. Others counter that dark woke tactics betray core liberal values like free speech and pluralism, warning that a movement cannot sustain itself on purity tests and public shamings without eventually devouring itself.
In summary, โdark wokeโ is a term that encapsulates the dark side of contemporary woke activism โ one where righteous passion turns into self-righteous zealotry. It signifies a brand of social justice activism that is maximalist and militant, often indulging in the very intolerance and dogmatism it seeks to eradicate. Major news outlets have reported on this phenomenon both directly โ explaining the meme and its spread โ and indirectly, by covering the many polarizing incidents and cultural battles that exemplify dark woke attitudes. The rise of this term in public discourse reflects a broader concern about how to pursue a more just society without losing sight of justice in the process. The ongoing conversation, from the halls of Congress to newspaper op-eds, shows society grappling with that balance: How far is too far, even in the name of a good cause?
