Actress Gal Gadot, famous for her “Wonder Woman” role, is not a typical Hollywood starlet. To begin with, she is Israeli. Also, she is a military veteran. And she is Jewish. There is a lot more to her than those three things, of course, but those are what matters for this article, and for the enormous political backlash she is currently experiencing.
Now, there is nothing unusual about famous foreign actresses (Monica Bellucci, Thandiwe Newton, Penelope Cruz) or actresses being Jewish (Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Lauren Bacal), or even female military veterans (Betty White, Jennifer Marshall, Bea Arthur). But it’s very rare to have an A-list actress who is foreign-born AND Jewish AND a military veteran.
This type of “intersectionality” makes Gal Gadot extremely attractive to the political Left. And with her many identities and many talents, Gadot has shot to the top of Hollywood stardom. Predictably, she quickly aligned herself with Leftist causes, such as gender pay gap , climate change, LGBT Pride, and infamously led a “cringe-inducing” video supporting the COVID-19 vaccination. She also enthusiastically congratulated Joe Biden when he won the 2020 US Presidential Election. All of this, in turn, enabled her anointment as a feminist icon, especially after declaring that “anyone not a feminist is a sexist.” She was also crowned “Girl Boss.” But now, the Left has turned on Wonder Woman.
While her woke credentials shielded her for a while, Gadot is now squarely in the crosshairs of cancel culture, largely for some of the same reasons she rose to fame in the first place. It began with a very carefully-worded–some may even say milquetoast–tweet she made on the X social media platform after the Hamas terror attacks in October of 2023:
Well, that seemed like a reasonable, heartfelt, and nuanced post, right?
Wrong.
After making the above post, the wokesters around the world took Gadot to task for not explicitly highlighting the deaths of innocent Palestinians. That was bad enough, but what really got her in trouble with her erstwhile allies on the political Left is her association with the screening of a compilation video made by the Israeli government that showed the atrocities carried out by Hamas against civilian and military targets. Even though she apparently didn’t even attend the event, she was still eviscerated in the press for having the temerity to be involved in the project in any way whatsoever.
A quote featured in a recent Newsweek article was typical:
So, because Gal Gadot showed empathy for her home country after it was the victim of one of the biggest terrorist attacks since 9/11, she has gone from “Girl Boss” to “genocide enabler” in the course of one 45 minute video. That’s got to be some kind of world record.
Unfortunately for Gadot, some of the things that contributed to her rise are now working against her, at least in the perception of the Left. For example, the fact that she’s Jewish, and Israeli, and that she’s concerned for “her people,” that makes her a “genocider.” And the fact that she once served in the Israeli Army to fulfill her compulsory national service as an Israeli citizen makes her an “imperial feminist,” at least according to Al Jazeera.
I haven’t seen the video of Hamas’ terrorist atrocities that Gal Gadot is getting cancelled over, because its distribution was limited to certain powerful journalists, celebrities, and politicians, and I’m not one of them. I’m sure the video has been leaked, and if I looked hard enough I could find it. But I don’t need to. I saw enough of Hamas’ own videos of them carrying out atrocities against civilians and members of the Israeli military, that I get the picture.
This situation reminds me of a simple truth when it comes to leftist politics, that I’ve seen proven over and over again in recent years. It’s this: it’s really easy to be part of the woke mob when their torches and pitchforks are directed at others. But when they start getting pointed at you, or things you care about, then sometimes the situation changes.
I want to make it very clear that I fully support Gal Gadot’s efforts to bring the true nature of Hamas’s crimes to the world, especially given the fact that Hamas killed and kidnapped Americans too. I think it took a lot of guts to do what she did, which she had to know was going to cause all kinds of negative blowback over it.
I also think that the whole Hamas/Israel war has opened up a lot of peoples’ eyes to the the true nature of the rabid far left, and the consequences of not standing up to the woke mob. I’m sure this will blow over shortly and that Gal Gadot will once again be a favorite of the feminist/intersectionist/uber-woke left.
But her temporary fall from grace should be a lesson for all.
