Amazon’s Tomb Raider series is shaping up to be one of the biggest television events of the decade, with new details emerging about the upcoming offering. The provider has added some massive names to the roster alongside Sophie Turner as Lara Croft and is planning to develop its own cinematic universe.
Jason Isaacs is the latest actor confirmed to be taking on a role in Tomb Raider, with Sigourney Weaver also rumored. If true, these names will add star power and prestige to the project.
Sophie Turner Confirmed to Play Lara Croft
Picking the right Lara Croft to carry the Amazon project forward and ensure its success was a tough decision, almost akin to selecting the next James Bond. The company knew that it needed a famous face, but one that could be easily molded into a new role unlike any she’d ever played before.
Turner isn’t a Hollywood A-lister yet, but she’s famous enough to carry the series. She rose to fame in Game of Thrones, becoming one of the key characters towards the end with an incredible arc that showed her full acting range. From there, Turner attracted Hollywood attention and landed a blockbuster role in X-Men: Apocalypse. This was followed by a leading role in Dark Phoenix in 2019.
Unfortunately for Turner, she hasn’t had many high-profile parts in film since then, with other actors of a similar ilk and age, such as Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney, attracting more attention from filmmakers. This Tomb Raider part could be exactly what Turner needs to reignite her career and become one of the biggest actresses on the planet. The fact that she doesn’t currently have any other major franchise involvement suggests that Turner will be able to commit to the role for many years.
Isaacs and Weaver Will Add Prestige to the Series
Details about Amazon’s Tomb Raider series have been scarce to date, and the production company is keeping its cards close to its chest. However, some information has been released to generate some early hype about the upcoming franchise reboot.
The latest news surrounding the project is that Isaacs has been cast in an undisclosed role. The actor is best known for playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, and most recently starred in the third season of The White Lotus on HBO. His part in that was praised, and he earned a second Golden Globe for the performance. Isaacs is a brilliant character actor who could take on a range of roles in the new Tomb Raider franchise. Fans will be left guessing whether he’s a good or a bad guy until the series airs.
Along with the reports on Isaacs, it has also been suggested that Weaver is interested in Amazon’s project. If she is cast, it will instantly elevate the franchise and bring in huge audiences. The iconic actress has been the face of countless blockbuster franchises over the years, including the recent Avatar sequels. She continues to draw in viewers of all ages and will add serious prestige to Tomb Raider.
Filming for Tomb Raider is set to start in 2026, so there could be more news on the way soon about further additions to the cast. The series is being made by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, suggesting that the standard will be high. The 40-year-old has worked on some impressive projects in recent years, most notably as a co-writer on No Time to Die. With experience in comedy and in various thrillers, Waller-Bridge could bring a unique take on Tomb Raider that has never been seen before.
Amazon’s Offering Could Be Huge
When Amazon MGM Studios picked up Tomb Raider, it immediately envisaged it as one of its key franchises moving forward. The company has the rights to produce various other major works, but the title that began its life as an iconic PlayStation game is seen as one with the highest profitability potential.
The new series is likely to be the start of something much bigger, with other films and games on the horizon. Amazon already has a head start with marketing for the Lara Croft title, as there are plenty of popular related games on the market already. There are plans for two new games in 2026 and 2027, which will help to add to the hype of the series. There are also existing casino online games in the franchise, with Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs among the top branded slot games available.
The exciting thing about the addition of big names like Isaacs is that they could play characters that are present in other offerings within the Tomb Raider universe. There could be spinoff series and movies that broaden the scope of Lara Croft’s world more than we’ve ever seen before.
The wait for Amazon’s Tomb Raider series shouldn’t be much longer, and it’s already shaping up to be a major event. After attracting the talented Isaacs, Amazon may be able to bring in some other well-known faces to the franchise.
