by Lou Marin
Eerily the silence rolled across fields
Left decimated and ravaged by war.
Eleven a.m. on the 11th of November
Victor and vanquished lay down arms,
Eternally promising to never again fight.
News of the Great War’s ending caused elation.
Every generation has their own war
Learned men say as they march on.
Europe, Asia, Russia, China, Japan, America
Vowed to keep peace while sharpening
Endless swords and polishing numerous bayonet.
Ninety years of struggle since that November morning.
Election days come and go, with new speeches
Listened to. “I will reduce troops and make peace
Everywhere around the globe where there is strife.
Vying for space in the green fields,
Ewes and lambs will lay with the lion and her cubs.”
November 11, 2008 comes and still the wars rage.
