It was a burgers on the grill holiday.
Warm weather means mellow charcoal
and ice cold beers in the late Spring.
The sun shone down brightly
and NASCAR was on TV.
Warm weather means mellow charcoal
and the first day of Summer safety.
As people hit the highways,
lakes and woods, shake off Winter,
they must be reminded of safety.
And ice cold beers in the late spring
create iron men and women,
who rarely stop to think
of much beyond the moment,
much beyond enjoyment and self.
The sun shone down brightly
upon the VFW monument
as I slowly placed a wreath,
stepped back two paces
and paused for a salute.
And NASCAR was on TV,
but the men I visited here
had left burgers and holiday,
family friends and loved ones
for commitment and eternal destiny.
