If you have made the New Years resolution to look after your health and wellbeing then you may be on the lookout for hints, tips, and tricks on how to manage this slightly better. While there are so many stories in the media about what is good for you, it can sometimes feel like you are navigating through a minefield. When it comes to your health, it is sometimes best to go back to basics.Â
Check out the article below to find out more about going back to basics with your health and wellbeing.
Drink Enough Water
One of the most important aspects of your health is to avoid dehydration, this can happen when you aren’t drinking enough water throughout the day. Your body is made up of a high percentage of water, approximately 70%. You regularly lose some of this during the day, through natural processes like breathing, sweating, and peeing. If you don’t replace this then you can quickly be struck down with textbook dehydration symptoms including a headache and lack of energy.
If you struggle with drinking water then know you are not alone, a high percentage of people also don’t like it. There are some hacks that you can try to improve your tolerance of the clear liquid that your body needs. You could use a sports bottle, these typically have a straw or suck top so you drink more than you realize. You could also invest in some flavored pods, these usually contain added vitamins and nutrients.
Get Solid Sleep
Another key to great health and wellbeing is getting enough sleep each night. It isn’t just about how much sleep you get, but also how well you sleep and whether or not you enter a deep sleep. This is characterized through experiencing REM, and is the deepest sleep you can enter. If you are frequently waking up through the night then you need to find the reason for this. It may be due to children waking up or you experiencing various aches and pains.
If you often miss out on six to eight solid hours of solid sleep then speak to your doctor, they may be able to prescribe you with some sleeping tablets. You could also try adopting a healthy nighttime routine, with no caffeine or doomscrolling your phone.
Find A Hobby
Hobbies can help you pass the time while also putting a smile on your face. If there is something you enjoy doing then why not take this up in your spare time. A hobby is a wonderful way to lower cortisol levels and prevent burnout. It could quite literally be anything from exercise to reading and everything in between. The last thing you want to be is bored, so a hobby can help keep the boredom at bay. If you enjoy reading then let a great book transport you to a whole new world. Alternatively, you might absolutely love gaming. Gaming is a complete hobby in itself and you could choose online gaming such as hearts or solitaire, or console gaming with close friends. Some hobbies you could even monetize if you are good at them, hobbies such as photography or crafting can earn you some good money on the side.
Hit The Gym
How much are you moving? If the answer to this question is not very much then you need to change this. You need to aim for around 45 minutes of vigorous exercise each day, this can be anything as long as it raises your heart rate. If you are trying to tone up then you should focus on your core or strength training. You don’t have to join a gym and head there everyday if you don’t want to, you can get just as good workouts in the comfort of your own home. The key is finding something you enjoy, this encourages you to carry on.
You could go for a run before work, head to the pool after work, or squeeze in a ten minute yoga workout during your lunch break. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends if they want to workout with you, you can motivate each other. If you need some gentle encouragement while exercising then you could work with a PT who will happily challenge and test you.
Focus On Diet
Now think about what your current diet looks like. If you have a hectic life then you may find yourself regularly living off junk food in the form of the grab and go diet. This will never end well for your health and could lead to weight-related illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. You don’t need to make massive changes to your diet, not all at once anyway. Making small changes now will make a whole world of difference to your health and wellbeing in the future. For example, healthy swaps can lessen your calorie and fat intake. If you aren’t sure how to go about making changes to your diet then you could speak with a nutritionist or dietician.
Attend Check Ups
Lastly, it is essential you always attend checkups as and when you are called for them. Checkups can detect ailments and conditions before you begin to notice the symptoms bothering you. Checkups as you age are important, it might be that you need glasses so will need to visit an optician. They can check deep inside your eyes and catch early signs and symptoms of glaucoma or even cataracts. Similarly with your hearing, an audiologist can spot signs of hearing loss before you even need to admit that you’re turning the tv volume up.
It can be daunting attending check ups with your doctor, so don’t be afraid to take someone with you. This could be a close friend or even family member, moral support is sometimes much needed.
So there you have it, we do hope you found this interesting and insightful. You should now have a greater understanding of how to go about looking after your health. Making small changes now will make a world of difference in the future.
