Having a conversation and opening up to people can be a real challenge for many of us, depending on our personality type. Well, for someone who is an extrovert, that might be the easiest task, but what about introverts? Sometimes they need more time to get used to the environment, people, and even the discussion topic.
However, avoiding some level of communication is not typical for introverts only. You might have been in a situation when after a working day you don’t have enough energy to discuss hard topics or get into friendly debates. Not surprisingly, when we look through the most discussed topics in the past years, most of the list consists of hard topics, such as politics, economy, and so on. This particular list is from 2019, but let’s be honest, those are still popular among us, and probably the lightest topic is sports, which is great.
We prepared this article to draw your attention to some other lightweight topics that can always help avoid emotional discussions but also keep you busy with some chit-chat.
Games with their whole variety
When someone brings up a topic, they must consider its popularity first, and whether they are the only one in the room interested in it or others also could share some interest. If you are a gaming fan, we have a piece of good news: there are millions of gamers worldwide, and the chances that at least a few of your acquaintances can be interested in gaming, are pretty much high.
If a few decades ago games were for a narrow group of people who enjoyed the activity as their main hobby, after the rise of online gaming options, many of us became engaged in this type of entertainment. Amid this fact, why is talking about gaming a good idea for a light and interesting conversation?
Well, let’s say you start a topic about upcoming poker tournaments. Basically, you have two potential targets: People who are interested in poker as traditional players (offline, with friends), and those who enjoy online gaming in general and also play poker online from time to time.
Talking about poker, it’s a great choice of a topic because the conversation can be very easy, but in case you have the mood to challenge your listeners, simply adjust the topic shifting to the strategic part of the game, telling stories from your experience, and so on.
Pop Culture to the Rescue: Your Ticket to Easy Connection
If you want to chill out and have some fun, pop culture is where it’s at. Movies, shows, a catchy song everyone’s humming, that weird meme your cousin keeps sending – there’s always something to connect over, and not only to find out similar tastes but also discover new music, books, movies, etc.
See, the thing about pop culture is, that it’s like everyone speaks the same language. We all know who the latest Marvel hero is, or have a hot take on the weird outfits on last night’s awards show. It’s the perfect way to find those little moments of “OMG, me too!” with pretty much anyone.
Best part? Pop culture chats are about having a good time. You can geek out with your coworker over whether Batman or Superman would win in a fight (Batman, obviously). Or bond with the lady at the dog park over how ridiculous the drama is on that new dating show. Even if you don’t love someone else’s favorite band, it’s just harmless banter. Can you imagine how much better the world would be if we argued about pop stars instead of politics?
And hey, pop culture isn’t just what’s on TV. Remember that dress on the internet that everyone saw in different colors? Or those silly dance challenges all over TikTok? Those are pure conversation gold, the kind where you get to laugh together at how weird the world is, instead of worrying about, well, everything else.
So the next time you’re feeling awkward, just throw out a pop culture reference. You might be surprised at how quickly you find your tribe.
Nostalgia Trip: When “Remember the good old days?” Works Every Time
Okay, let’s face it: Sometimes the best way to unwind is by talking about the past. There’s just something so comforting about bringing up those old days – the good, the bad, and the hilariously embarrassing. It’s like you’re instantly transported back to simpler times.
Think about it: Did you and your siblings fight over who got to watch their favorite Saturday morning cartoons? Or maybe you all collected those weird trading cards or obsessively practiced the latest dance move. You’ll be amazed at how much you’ve forgotten, and how those little things come flooding back the minute someone mentions it.
Or if you want to go bigger, think music trends (did anyone wear parachute pants?), those chunky old computers, or even the weird snacks from your childhood. Nostalgia is like this big, warm hug. It reminds you that you’ve come a long way, but also that some things (like the joy of finding a twenty in your old jeans) never change.
