Some people seem to naturally have green thumbs, or maybe it’s simply a matter of incredible luck. They can plant seeds, forget about them for days or weeks at a time, and still end up with lush, beautiful plants. For most people, though, growing healthy plants doesn’t happen on its own. It takes a lot of time and effort. It also entails giving those plants the attention they demand and the elements they need to grow.
Growing Healthy Plants
It’s only fair to mention that some plants need more human intervention than others. Cacti, for example, rarely need anything from their owners. Exotic orchids, on the other hand, seem to wither away if you speak too loudly in their immediate vicinity. Cannabis is often said to be a fairly undemanding crop, but most people find that growing marijuana requires quite a bit of care. Keep the following factors in mind when growing cannabis to keep the plants strong and ensure a larger yield.
Sunlight is one of plants’ most significant needs. It gives plants energy and helps them process nutrients. It also provides the warmth they need to stay strong. Without sunlight, plants can’t grow properly. If cannabis plants don’t get enough of the right types of light, they won’t produce the potent buds you’re looking for, either. If you’re growing indoors, you’ll need to simulate sunlight with grow lamps.
Nutrients are also essential for plant growth. Plants mainly need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but they require several other nutrients in smaller amounts. When plants receive light, they use those nutrients to make food. In turn, they’re able to grow and mature. Outdoors, plants receive some of the vitamins and minerals they need from soil. You may still need to add extras to the mix, though. Indoor plants will need special growing media and nutrient supplements to stay healthy.
Water is crucial for plants, too. Like other living things, they’re mainly composed of water. It gives them strength and stability, which is particularly helpful as they grow taller and heavier. Water is also necessary for nutrient intake. Plants draw in nutrients through their roots, and they can’t do so without adequate amounts of moisture. At the same time, water helps plants maintain appropriate internal temperatures.
Air is equally vital for healthy plants. They gather carbon dioxide from the air to help them create food and transform it into energy. As is the case with water, air is important for temperature regulation, too. Be sure to space your plants far enough apart to allow adequate airflow. It’s only natural to want to pack as many plants as possible into a garden or grow room, but not giving them enough space will result in sickly plants and smaller yields.
Producing a Healthy Cannabis Crop
Those are the main elements cannabis plants need to stay healthy and produce potent buds. Some strains have different needs than others, so conducting in-depth research into the specific needs of the strains you’re growing is advised. Be sure to give them ample light and air, and provide the water and nutrients they require to stay strong. In the end, you’ll have a bountiful harvest to show for all the time and effort you put into the process.
