You see me on the streets of this city
You see me in uniform
You see the badge on my chest
I just smile and nod as you walk by me
You didn’t see the tears I shed
For the dead baby that was left unattended
Because the parents were passed out from
The heroin they just shot up
You see me on the streets of this city
You see me in uniform
You see the badge on my chest
I just smile and nod as you walk by me
You didn’t see that I had to notify parents
That their child has been killed
Killed by that 4th time drunk driver
The courts have repeatedly been lenient to
You see me on the streets of this city
You see me in uniform
You see the badge on my chest
I just smile and nod as you walk by me
You didn’t see that I was just at a gruesome murder
Bodies stabbed to death
Suspect in custody
Blood covered uniform
You see me on the streets of this city
You see me in uniform
You see the badge on my chest
I just smile and nod as you walk by me
It’s a mask we’ve all learned to wear
To mask the darkness we face every day
For it’s a darkness that remains with us
For the rest of our lives
