You may be asking yourself, what exactly is pop culture? It usually refers to popular culture, one that we see presented through fashion outlets, music channels and through our favourite icons. Usually aimed towards younger generations as they are seen to use social media the most and are more likely to be influenced by it.
Pop culture has a large part in the success of the fashion industry. It is how many trends form in this modern age especially with their being so many different categories and niches in fashion. Current life events have a way of implementing pop culture into the fashion world. Whether it’s a certain sport implementing its style on the world like a rise in oversized varsity jackets, or a number one song trending globally bring back the nostalgia of 2000’s fashion, pop culture has a way of reshaping fashion trends and the direction fashion brands are going to go in for their next range.
Why Pop Culture has this influence
You will have noticed that you cannot scroll through social media, watch a film or walk outside for ten minutes without seeing some form of pop culture element or inspired advertisements.
Movies tend to feature iconic looks that people obsess over and try to recreate and sometimes have a part to play in the resurgence of old styles. This is usually relevant when a popular tv show is set in the 80’s or 90’s so people get a better sense of the vibe and overall look they bring.
Influencers are a powerhouse in the modern-day world of fashion. From get ready with me videos, to brand deals they reach specific audiences that brands will have thoroughly researched and will want to tap into. This is the same for musicians. As music and fashion are so heavily intertwined through celebrity deals and just the overall dress sense of the musician themselves. Take Harry Styles for instance, he brought back 70’s inspired fashion and started a phenomenon that changed the way people wore trousers and jeans.
We are a collection of people that love to be influenced whether we know it or not. Fashion is the same. Pop culture is a drive for many social changes and fashion follows the change to stay relevant and on top as a market. Making something mainstream is not as difficult as it once was which makes pop cultures relevance and impact on fashion ever greater.
The key to making an influence is making something desirable so that you change people’s current preferences and so that they then make certain choices that change their lifestyle. This seems to be happening on a much more frequent basis now, but it does not mean that the fashion movements don’t stick around long enough to be relevant.
Some of the current pop culture trends influencing the fashion world today are: · Y2K style Ai generated image: People get a sense of what they look like in a style through an ai generated image even before they buy a piece of clothing.
· Halloween has become a huge influence: we are seeing people dress in a darker sense and we are seeing the trend of both scary or themed makeup and fashion looks.
· Cosy routines: As the weather is changing to cooler days, we are seeing people hone in on cozy fashion content with the overall theme of autumn, that is accompanied by the sent of pumpkin chai lattes and cinnamon and apple.
Pop culture does define this time of year in a few words, orange, pumpkin and harvests, depicting the seasons favourite activities.
Overall, pop culture tends to be the driving force of fashion trends. It keeps the fashion industry thriving with its constantly changing focuses and this alone features numerous categories and factors that apply to various types of people from all corners of the earth.
