Abu Dhabi Airports (AD Airports) has achieved remarkable growth in the first half of 2024, reflecting its expanding role as a key global aviation hub. According to UAE news today, from January 1 to June 30, 2024, the airports facilitated the travel of 13,983,885 passengers, marking an impressive 33.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Zayed International Airport (AUH), the flagship facility of AD Airports, alone handled 13,726,550 passengers, representing a 33.8% rise. These figures not only exceed expectations but also highlight the airport’s robust capacity to manage increased passenger traffic efficiently.
A substantial increase in flight movements accompanied the significant surge in passenger traffic. AD Airports recorded a 24.3% rise in flight operations, with a total of 84,286 flights during the first half of 2024, up from 67,835 flights in 2023. This increase underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing appeal as a prime travel destination and a vital transit hub. The expanded flight operations reflect a broader trend of heightened global travel activity and the emirate’s strategic positioning in the international aviation network.
AD Airports has proactively expanded its airline and destination network from Abu Dhabi in response to the growing demand. In the second quarter of 2024, the airport welcomed two new airlines. US Bangla Airlines launched three weekly flights to Chittagong and four weekly flights to Dhaka, while British Airways began offering daily flights to London Heathrow. This expansion is a testament to the airport’s strategic efforts to enhance connectivity and provide more options for travellers. Additionally, the network of destinations expanded significantly with the introduction of year-round services to Sarajevo (Wizzair Abu Dhabi), Chandigarh (IndiGo), and Jaipur. Seasonal flights were also added to destinations such as Trabzon (Air Arabia Abu Dhabi), Nice, Mykonos, Santorini, and Malaga (Etihad), broadening passenger travel choices.
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at AD Airports, expressed her pride in the team’s achievements. She commented, “Our traffic results for the first six months of this year are a testament to the tireless efforts of the entire team at Abu Dhabi Airports. We are incredibly proud of this milestone, which highlights the resilience of our teams, airline partners, and stakeholder community and the robustness of our infrastructure during the peak operational season. We are enthusiastic about the future of Abu Dhabi’s tourism and trade prospects and the pivotal role our airports will play in boosting these sectors.”
The significant increase in cargo handling is another highlight of AD Airports’ performance in the first half of 2024. The airports managed an impressive 254,300 tonnes of cargo year-to-date, underscoring Abu Dhabi’s critical role in facilitating international trade. Several key initiatives contributed to this achievement. AD Airports partnered with Astral Aviation and Etihad Airways to optimise cargo flows between Africa and the UAE. A new DHL airside facility was inaugurated during the second quarter to enhance capacity, and the design phase of the new East Midfield cargo terminal was finalised. The new terminal is expected to support the goal of handling 1.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2030, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s strategic importance in global logistics and supply chain management.
Overall, the first half of 2024 has been marked by exceptional growth and achievements for Abu Dhabi Airports. The substantial increase in passenger traffic, the expansion of the airline and destination network, and the robust cargo handling capabilities all highlight the emirate’s strategic role in global aviation and trade. Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and fostering strategic partnerships is paying off, positioning the Emirates as a leading regional aviation hub and beyond.
These developments offer exciting opportunities and insights into Abu Dhabi’s dynamic aviation world. For aviation enthusiasts, travel bloggers, business travellers, and the general public, Abu Dhabi Airports’ continued growth and success reflect the hard work and dedication of its team, partners, and stakeholders.
