Is your backyard just a patch of grass or a place where you store your grill? If it is, you should know that it’s a shame you’re not really using your backyard to its fullest potential. You might have settled for what you have because you think you’d need an expensive renovation to turn it into a sanctuary, but that’s not the case at all.
With just a few tweaks, even the most boring, basic backyard can be a place you’ll absolutely love having. And using, of course. You can drink your morning coffee in the sun, read a book while listening to the birds, work out in the fresh air… Basically, anything you want.
What Every Stress-Free Backyard Has
Adding furniture and planting flowers is a good way to start, but that’s not going to make your backyard into a peaceful retreat. You want to create a place that forces you to slow down, breathe deep, and just… Unwind.
Here are some things you might want to consider adding.
- Cozy Seating
The right seating will make your outdoor space go from a backyard into a place you’ll love using. Add fluffy cushioned chairs for lounging around, a hammock for naps, and a sectional for when you have friends and family over.
As far as materials go, you want something that looks nice, obviously, but it should also be weather-resistant. So, go for treated wood, metal, or wicker, and waterproof cushions.
- Strategic Landscaping
Plants and trees make your backyard look beautiful, but they also create shade, improve the quality of the air, and give the space a sense of calm. If you don’t like gardening and don’t want a lot of upkeep, get low-maintenance plants like perennials, succulents, or native plants that already do well where you live.
Even if it’s just a few planters with greenery, it will still add life and tranquility to the backyard.
- Deck
A custom deck is the perfect addition to any backyard. Relax on it with a good book, entertain your guests, work out… It’s incredibly versatile. It will be even better if you add built-in seating to it, and there can even be a privacy screen.
Unless you have experience and can do it yourself, make sure to choose a reputable professional to build it. Google “deck builder near me” and see what pops up; you’ll quickly find a couple of local businesses, giving you a wider plethora of options. It’s extremely important that the deck is made of durable, quality materials that fit your local climate. Otherwise, you won’t have it for very long.
- Lighting
Soft lighting is ideal because it gives the place a peaceful, cozy vibe when the sun sets. Drape string lights over a pergola or around trees and the glow you’ll get will be just magical. Lanterns and solar-powered fixtures are also excellent, plus they’re energy-efficient.
- Water Features
The sound of running wonder can reduce stress within just a few seconds, so this is definitely something you’ll want to consider adding. It doesn’t have to be anything grand or gaudy. You can have a small fountain, a pond, or even a little tabletop waterfall to get that sound we all love.
How to Personalize Your Backyard
The furniture, the water features, the lighting… All of that is super important, but unless you add a few personal tweaks to your backyard, it won’t really feel like home.
Start with privacy. You’re trying to escape the rest of the world, so add trellises, fences, or hedges to make your backyard feel secluded. You’ll see how much easier it will be to relax without distractions. Then, think about how you want to use the space. Will it be a cozy spot to read, do you want to host dinners there, or do you have hobbies like gardening and painting and want a corner for it? You can divide your yard into zones, where each of them has a different purpose.
We’re not done yet! You also want to engage your senses, and fragrant plants are the way to do it. Lavender and jasmine are not just beautiful, but they smell extremely pleasant. You can also add speakers and play calming music. For furniture, earthy tones, and soft blues will instantly make the place feel calmer and more relaxing.
None of this will work if your backyard isn’t tidy, so try not to have clutter in it. Set aside one day a week to clean it up and get rid of anything that’s in the way.
Conclusion
Now all that’s left is to enjoy your newly renovated backyard! The best thing is that you have a bunch of ideas and, if you decide to use all of them – great! But you can pick and choose and tailor everything to what you want.
You’re not a people-y person and don’t plan on entertaining? Okay, more space for reading and relaxing! You don’t feel like having a fountain? No matter, whether your cat, dog, bunny, duck, or whatever furbaby (ok, ducks have feathers) you have; it’ll have more space to run around and do their thing.
Just make sure not to let your backyard sit there unused. That’d be a waste!
