Every girl who was told she has damaged, dry, and dull hair should sue her hair stylist or salon. Why? Because there is a high chance that your hair had no issues! It was simply curly or wavy textured hair, and thinking it was straight, you kept using products to contain the dryness. So, how do you get those shiny, natural ringlets & coils and well-defined curls? The CGM, or the curly girl method, is the best method to practice.
If you have curly hair, then you need to build a perfect curly hair routine. Using CGM is one of the best approaches to having naturally shiny curls.
However, most blogs or tutorials about CGM are too confusing. That is why this blog takes the liberty of simplifying the steps you need to take in order to have the perfect curly hair. This is a low-stress CGM with no gatekeeping and ideal results. So, are you ready to weave life into your curly hair and look fabulous? Get ready, then!
Steps for building a curly hair routine
● Wash your hair
Since this is your first time using the Curly Girl Method, the first thing to do is you will use a curly-hair shampoo, sulfate-free, to clean your scalp and free the hair of any extra oil. This step is especially important for removing sebum buildup on scalp, which can weigh curls down, interfere with definition, and make hair appear dull instead of bouncy. Remember to massage your scalp with the shampoo for 60 seconds before you rinse it off.
● Use a conditioner
It is best to use the same brand’s shampoo and conditioner. After you wash the shampoo off, take a handful of conditioner and scrunch it through your hair. Make sure the conditioner is fully saturated, or your hair looks slimy. Now, use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your hair. After you detangle your hair, wash the conditioner off, but not completely.
● Styling gel
It is time to now put the styling gel into your hair. Rake a generous amount of gel and put it into your hair. Put it on when your hair is sopping wet for better results.
● Drying your curly hair
It is time to dry your curly hair by cupping and scrunching the extra water from your hair using a microfibre towel. After a while, you can let your hair air-dry. Once the hair is completely dry, scrunch it with your hand. This will remove the extra layer of gel coating from your hair.
● The process continues
Every time you want to wash your hair, this is the process that you will need to repeat.
Curly girl method—what is it, and will it work on my hair?
The curly girl method was created originally by curl expert and hairstylist Lorraine Massey. In her book, ‘Curly Girl: The Handbook,’ she explains a set of rules, products, and techniques designed to enhance the natural texture of your hair. The results and specifics of the method will depend on your curl type. For instance, if you have super-tight coils, you might change the routine a bit more than someone who has fine waves. But the general idea is the same—using the correct routine helps create beautifully defined curls. So, find your hair type, then use this method to get naturally shiny curls.
Things to avoid when doing the curly-girl method
- Stop using traditional drying shampoos full of sulphates and silicones.
- Low heat diffusers used sparingly are okay. But avoid all the other heating tools like flat irons and curling irons.
- Do not use any mineral oil on your hair, as it will require a harsh sulphate shampoo to remove.
- Let your hair dry naturally.
Ending note…
Every hair is different, even curly ones. The natural shine and healthy hair come from inside. So, apart from using the following steps to build your curly hair routine, focus on eating the right nutrients. Also, keep yourself hydrated because dehydration not only affects your body but also your skin and hair. Here’s hoping your curly hair will now see good hair days only!
