Home maintenance is something that’s easy to overlook, but doing so will mean major repairs become necessary at some point. By maintaining the home and inspecting it regularly, it’s possible to catch issues while they’re small and easier to fix. Homeowners will want to make sure they do the following to help keep their homes in great shape year after year.
Keep the HVAC in Good Shape
It’s crucial to make sure the HVAC system is in good condition to prevent the home from becoming too hot or cold. Along with being uncomfortable, extreme heat or cold inside the home can be dangerous. It’s also possible for mold and other issues to occur if the HVAC system stops working. Preventing breakdowns is easy when you get your HVAC looked at by a professional on a regular basis. Homeowners can also keep an eye out for any of the following.
- Odd Smells or Sounds
- Rapidly Turning Off and On
- Struggling to Keep a Consistent Temperature
- Trouble Turning On
- Issues With the Thermostat
Test Smoke Detectors
Make sure to test the smoke detectors in the home regularly to ensure they will work if needed. If there is a fire inside the home, smoke detectors make it possible to get out of the home quickly so everyone is safe. If any of the smoke detectors do not work, replace them right away. It is also recommended to replace the smoke detectors if they are at least 10 years old, as they may not work properly after this point. Homes may also require carbon monoxide detectors. If so, these should be inspected regularly as well and replaced as needed to ensure they work correctly.
Check for Leaks
Check around the home for any leaks from the plumbing. If one is found, it may be necessary to shut off the water until repairs can be made to prevent potential damage. Once the water is shut off, a professional can handle the repairs and then the area can be cleaned to prevent further damage. Signs of a leak can include the following.
- Standing Water Near the Plumbing
- Water Dripping From Fixtures
- Discolored Drywall Near the Plumbing
- Mold Growth Near the Plumbing
- Mildew Smells in the Home
Inspect the Outside of the Home
Be sure to inspect the exterior of the home on a regular basis to ensure everything is in good shape. If anything is damaged or worn down, it is a good idea to get professional assistance with repairs to make sure they’re done right and to ensure everyone is safe. Some of the things to inspect outside the home include the following.
- Trees for Dead or Dying Branches
- The Roof From the Ground Level
- The Gutters and Downspouts
- The Siding of the Home
- Any Exterior Buildings Like Sheds
- Pools, Decks, and Patios for Damage
Maintaining a home does take work, but it can help reduce the costs of owning a home and prevent significant damage. Take the time to look around the home on a regular basis to see if everything is still in good shape. If any issues are noticed or there are any concerns, be sure to work with the professionals to ensure everything is fixed quickly. Taking the time to maintain the home can help you continue enjoying it for many more years.
