I hate it when someone calls me an idiot about something and they turn out to be right.
I got an e-mail from a local elected official; he suggested I was an idiot for a statement I made in an article a few days back. I blamed elected officials for the state of the Union – he ended his message with “You elected us”.
We all have that one issue that takes priority over anything else and we all start out intending to elect the candidate who best reflects our view on that issue. For me it is always the constitution – specifically the 10th and 2nd amendments.
Unfortunately real issues, as a whole, began to take a back seat right after the Nixon-Kennedy debate. Campaign managers figured out they could cultivate more voters with a personality and image than any policy statement.
A few years after the Kennedy/Nixon debate someone decided to let us kids vote and Politicals had to completely revamp their strategies and figure out how to deal with ratification of the 26th amendment and an influx of thousands of mostly Single Issue Voters.
Tapping into the youth vote proved good for the momentum and enthusiasm of a campaign but it never did much in the way of getting anyone elected.
I can remember going to McGovern rallies that rivaled anything Bernie or the Trump can muster up and he got beat like an ugly step-child.
The 1968 and 1972 audiences hadn’t put on the blinders yet. There was a long list of issues they wanted addressed and they didn’t just follow a trail of goose bumps and personality cults as is so common today.
Single issue movements were always there on the peripheral plane waiting for some nefarious Political to realize that confusion and lack of understanding could be harnessed.
With the advent of the Birther movement, Politicals on both sides saw the advantage of catering to groups who require no facts, no legitimate proposals and don’t care if you lie to them as long as it feels good.
Consequently three of the four of the frontrunners have seized the opportunity. All but one of the top four presidential hopefuls are relying on the Single Issue Voter to provide momentum and sound bites.
The typical Single Issue Voter takes a position that feels good and nothing else matters. It might be a voter who is offended by the Ted Cruz’s Theocratic or Fascist stand or maybe it is the “Hillary is a Liar” or “Benghazi bandwagon”; they go blind to any other issue.
The more confused amongst them just flock together and bleat about social injustice and fairness, Medicare for all, the evils of Obamacare or EOs. In each case common sense appears to be abandoned, facts discounted and reason ignored – This is exactly what the Political wants.
The average American Political can smell stupidity on a constituent.
They’re drawn to it like dope dogs to my old roommate’s wall locker. They shepherd it and nurture it to maturity – the ones who are really good at it, the Teds and Hillarys of the world, can focus on two or three groups of Single Issue Voter s at a time.
The leading left wing contender understands that emotional tag lines and a flowery outlook on reality are fallow ground for the Anti- gun movement. She knows their buzz words – the anti-2nd Amendment crowd is in her pocket.
A more loyal group of sheeple doesn’t exist. I would wager that she could propose penis registration and skinny jeaned man-buns would line up to prove they were progressive enough to be in the club.
The slightly further left wing prospect thinks he’s a Democratic Socialist. Bernie took a lesson from George McGovern – link into the immature vote, the ones who have no clue about history, policy or Socialism.
They don’t care that 100% of Bernie’s proposals have been tried and failed miserably – or that they lead to poverty, oppression and tyranny. As long as Bernie keeps repeating the “get yer free stuff here” mantra, reality and the issues wont be factor to his Single Issue Voters.
Jut FYI – Some of us have lived and operated under the Democratic Socialist dream Bernie offers – I assure you, It was a nightmare.
The extreme Right Wing contender knows that snuggling up with theocrats, Islama-phobes and the anti-Obamacare contingency is the foundation of his base.
Cruz’s followers don’t care that his religious tests and Himmler-esque proposals are diametrically opposed to the Constitution and the Founders intent, they’re all in the club so his new laws wont hurt them.
The fact that 99% of what Cruz says about Obamacare and Islam is false means nothing. So long as he waives his Bible, invokes his god and doesn’t slip up and tell the truth – they will stand with him. Ted’s Single Issue Voters care nothing for facts as long as there is an quasi-Amen at the end.
I’m reluctant to even mention the Trump, he isn’t just snuggling up with Goebbels, he’s virtually a card carrying member of the club. The Trump took the Tea Party’s extreme right wing leanings, pushed them just a little further to the right and built a textbook National Socialist platform out of them .
The fact he is even on the ballot is an indictment on the U.S. education system. His followers stand for nothing, therefore the Trump feels no obligation to make any sense or stay within the lines of reality.
Trump’s “No issue” voters are worse than Single Issue Voters, they have no opinion unless their Führer gives them one. They rely on the warm and fuzzies rather than any measure of intellect or common sense to make their choices for them.
There is little hope for the Trump follower’s level of voluntary ignorance so there is little reason to bother with them. Natural selection will eventually thin the herd back to pre-9/11 levels.
If you find yourself to have evolved into a single issue voter – just shake your head real hard until your senses return, then step back and look at the big picture. I guarantee, that if you put your thinking cap on, you’ll discover there are other things that matter and Hillary’s lies or Ted’s fascist folly will become less of an impending doom.
Things get easier once you accept that there is no good choice; but a choice must be made, so just make sure you make that choice based on reality – on facts, not propaganda.
Don’t sweat the small stuff… It’s irrelvant who you choose as the lesser evil.
Of course Hillary is a liar, and that is one of her qualities; Sure Ted Cruz is a narcissistic faker hiding between the pews.
Sure anyone with a minimal grip on reality understands that Bernie Sanders is either as much of a liar as Hillary or gone senile;
And obviously anyone who thinks the last member of our quartet of political Mullet is anything but void of truth and integrity deserves to be in the Trump camp.
Honesty has NEVER been a presidential quality – In fact lying is a requirement of the job.
That’s probably why we make up stories about Honest Abe or George Washington and the Cherry tree. Who wants to admit that lying is a family value for most of our leaders – or that we demand it of them?
There have only been two elected presidents in our lifetimes who were so profanely incompetent that they couldn’t manage re-election – even Obama managed to get re-elected.
The first one was useless as a president because he wouldn’t lie, and the other was even more useless because he lied openly, but wasn’t sharp enough to be good at it.
Don’t be a Single Issue Voter , that’s how we ended up with these bamboozlers on the ballot in the first place – I wish I had something positive to say about one of them.
I understand that not all Cruz voters lean toward Fascism; Not all Sanders voters are ignorant of history and not all Clinton voters ignore her history or accept her level of corruption. Some of each camp understand a choice must be made and have weighed the issues and made a decision to support their chosen lesser evil – I respect that choice.
The only wrong vote is the vote not cast.
The average Havok Journal reader is a about 5 steps above each of these examples I gave and I am greatful for that. You guys tend to take a position based on the big pucture.
The best political advice I ever was ever given was to: “vote your conscience in the primaries and your common sense in the general” – Forget the pet peeve and vote what is best for the Republic… even if your assessment of what is best for the Republic is the opposite of mine.
So just choose the one you think will do the least damage:
The confused Democratic Socialist;
The borderline National Socialist or
It’s Kind of like choosing between enjoying a colonoscopy, a mastectomy or penectomy.
About 40 years ago I had a roomate named Tyrone – he had what he called a “Pray’in Auntee” and he would send her money to pray for things –It’s probably the only reason the dogs never found anything in his locker… or mine.
If I had a “Pray’in Auntee” in my family – I’d be sending her a Double-Sawbuck and asking her to pray that NO ONE on either side wins enough delegates to claim the candidacy and that the delegates would come to their senses, reject the 4 disasterous options we are faced with, and start over.
It would be a waste of $20 but at least I would have tried.
“Assuming either the Left Wing or the Right Wing gained control of the country, it would probably fly around in circles.”
