Trump’s Slide Into Sedition
by Shelly Goode-Burgoyne
Three are three things I want to make clear up front: I am a lifelong Republican from Arizona, a combat veteran, and I own guns.
That said, I don’t support Donald Trump for president, and neither should you. Trump’s poll numbers suck, his supporters who are not the most fervent are fleeing his camp and they are fleeing fast, his recent rallies report less turnout than ever. Yesterday, the twelfth American woman came forward with claims that he sexually assaulted her…let me say that again: at least twelve American citizens, deserving of the same respect as any other citizen, claim that this man running for President of the United States, sexually assaulted them. Further, there actually might be a tape from his Apprentice days, in which he says the “N” word.
Trump hasn’t paid federal income taxes in who knows how many years, he has mocked our country’s most vulnerable citizens, and insulted all hard working Mexican Americans. He has also cozied up to Russia, and as a result has been played by Putin (a professional spy) and played hard. Trump has suggested that he, and he alone can “Lock Hillary up”. And finally Trump is descending into an abyss of conspiratorial theories and treasonous talk like we have never seen come from the mouth of a presidential candidate.
Look, I am not willing to say the guy is toast (never say never), but it doesn’t look good for Trump, and he knows it…the wounded bear has been backed into a corner and you better believe it, he will not go quietly into the night.
Nope, this self-involved man child will violently spit and grasp at everyone and everything he can on his way down, to include our democracy. Yep that’s right, his newest and most unsettling claim yet: that our nation’s election is rigged and that the entire system is working against him. Really?
It is no secret, that I like almost the entire world loath this idiot, but It is this claim of a rigged system and corruption in our Republic’s electoral system that I and so many Americans (Republicans and Democrats), find most terrifying. Even Paul Ryan, who has stood by this mad man’s side knows Trump’s new claims are dangerous. Paul Ryan’s office: “Our democracy relies on confidence in election results, and the Speaker is fully confident the states will carry out this election with integrity”.
The Speaker of the House is right, our free Republic is almost entirely based on American’s trust in the “system”, even if that system does not produce the candidate of our choice. Countries whose leaders incite their supporters to conduct “Revolutions” or “Coups” are third world dictatorships and poor Banana Republics who remain in a perpetual state of poverty, violence, and revolution; Venezuela and Ecuador quickly come to mind, but there are many more. In fact, one tell-tale sign that a developing country is on its way to real democracy and peace, is to conduct a peaceful election and accept the results without unrest…this is referred to as the peaceful transition of power.
When it comes to sedition, Trump is just one man and alone is powerless, it is his followers that carry his diseased water that many find categorically terrifying, his followers who blindly follow and accept everything this one man says, his followers who rage with hate and shriek “Lock her up”, his followers who deal in shadowy and desperate conspiracy theories, his followers who cannot be bothered to read news from any source, other than the garbage they find at their usual contaminated watering holes, which by the way, inhabit the darkest and dankest corners of the internet.
Our founding fathers (who Trump followers love to revere, only when it is convenient for them), founded a Republic, and in this free Republic, they created something called the Electoral System which includes state based elections. Each state holds their own elections, with their own rules. Some states have paper voting, some have punch card voting, some have electronic voting (that by the way, Trump assisted the Russians in hacking). Each state’s system for casting one’s ballot is really different, and by any measure it would be damn difficult to “rig” all of them. So, is Trump really telling his devoted followers that all of fifty states in our Republic are in on it? Really?
News flash to Trump supporters: We DO NOT have a federal election system and thank heavens we don’t. Trump and his followers would be wise to remember that Nixon and Gore both accepted a very close defeat and called on the country to unite. Matt Mackowiak, a Republican consultant based in Texas stated: “It is deeply irresponsible and borderline treasonous to undermine our electoral system in the way Trump is doing.”
Senator Al Gore, when he lost the Presidential election to Bush: “I spoke with George W. Bush and congratulated him on becoming the 43rd president of the United States — and I promised him that I wouldn’t call him back this time,” Gore said. “I offered to meet with him as soon as possible so that we can start to heal the divisions of the campaign and the contest through which we just passed.”
Trump’s claim of a rigged election even before we have had an election is a step into sedition, and a step to far. This one mad man can rage all he wants, he can spit anger and hate all he wants, he can talk about over half of our nation’s population like they are animals all he wants. I do not believe that this one man holds any real power, but his followers do, and when they blindly believe that the election systems in all fifty American states are “rigged” against their choice for President, and when they obediently kneel to Trump’s demand for revolution because he is losing an election, they have been played and played hard. If they act on this call to arms, they are to blame for treason en masse, and no one else.
