I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Freedom isn’t for sissies, and the recent events in Garland Texas illustrate just this. I fully recognize that putting the Prophet Muhammed’s image to paper is extremely insulting to Muslims, but if the radicals among the Muslim faith cannot handle it, then they are sissies. Real freedom in action is often brutal to watch. If you are an American citizen and are remotely paying attention, real freedom is sure to ruthlessly insult and offend you at some point. There will certainly come a definitive point in which you will seethe with anger, be personally affronted, and sometimes even weep at the means fellow citizens choose to illustrate their beliefs.
For me, the Westboro Baptists achieve just this reaction. When this group protests at the funerals of our fallen Servicemembers, and collectively scream: “God hates Soldiers.” I want to shut them up, to push them off the sidewalk, and literally kick them in the face…but I can’t, and I won’t. I have travelled and fought in places that would allow me to do just that; to push these soldier hating, religious zealots off the sidewalk, strike them down, or demand their arrest. But these places are nowhere I am interested in living, so this is the price folks, this is the price of real freedom, and freedom isn’t for sissies.
But radical Islamists are not the only sissies among us. When I see veterans completely lose their bearing, allowing anger and shock at someone else’s dogmas to hijack their judgment…I think they are sissies too, and that it is not too different from the two sissies who allowed sheer anger to hijack their judgement, as they attempted to murder a room full of American citizens in Garland, Texas who dared to draw their Prophet’s image.
Now is the point that you are thinking: wow! That is quite a jump, comparing the two, after all, the veteran who became outraged by the desecration of the flag on her college campus, simply grabbed it from the protesters hands, while the radical Islamists hanging out in Garland Texas, were on a mission to violently murder those who they disagreed with. But, really, it is not so big of a jump.
If we consider for a moment that drawing Muhammad is equally as offending to radical Muslims as is the abuse of our flag to veterans, then the line between the two becomes less clear. It is a slippery slope, and one can easily begin to rationalize eliminating those who they disagree with or find “dangerous.” Freedom isn’t for sissies, and the two radical Islamists who attempted to murder innocent Americans in Garland Texas are Sissies, and the veteran who infringed upon her fellow citizen’s rights because she simply could not tolerate the American flag being stomped on, is also a sissy.
Fortunately, I believe that most Americans are not sissies, most freedom loving Americans can take it. Most of us can control ourselves, we can respect the rule of law, and we understand that our strength comes from our secularism. We recognize that this is what our military fights for. We know it is what civilians fight for as they go to their jobs every day and attempt to make an honest living, give back, and holding this nation up. Most Americans know the price of real freedom and they are happy to pay it.
So all the sissies out there: you are on notice. Remember why our nation is the land where oppressed people from all over the world desire to live, and risk their lives to come to. Remember why our soldiers, who you say you love and respect die on foreign soil. Remember why the police officer or social worker, who scrape by on $34,000.00 a year, sacrifice so much, remember why and how our nation came into existence. Finally, pick up a history book and calm the f#@k down. Freedom is tough to watch, but the exact moment it pisses you off, is the exact moment you know it is real.
